To a stirred solution of (3-ethynylphenyl)methanol (52, 2.37 g, 17.93 mmol, 1 equiv.) and imidazole (1.83 g, 26.90 mmol, 1.5 equiv.) in DMF (80 mL) was added slowly dropwise triisopropylsilyl chloride (4.22 mL, 19.70 mmol, 1.1 equiv.).  The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours.

The reaction was poured onto water (100 mL) and the product was extracted into hexane (3 x 100 mL).  The hexane washes were combined and washed with water (2 x 100 mL) and brine (100 mL) before being dried over magnesium sulphate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure.

The product was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, 1 % diethyl ether in hexane) to yield the pure product (3.74 g, 12.96 mmol, 72 %).
